Magnetic fields of chemically peculiar stars. I. The catalog of magnetic CP stars This is the first paper of the series dedicated to the analysis of themagnetism of chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper Main Sequence.We use our own measurements and published data to compile a catalog ofmagnetic CP stars containing a total of 326 objects with confidentlydetected magnetic fields and 29 stars which are very likely to possessmagnetic field. We obtained the data on the magnetism of theoverwhelming majority of the stars solely based on the analysis oflongitudinal field component B e . The surface magneticfield, B s , has been measured for 49 objects. Our analysisshows that the number of magnetic CP stars decreases with increasingfield strength in accordance with exponential law, and stars with B e exceeding 5kG occur rarely (about 3% objects of ourlist).
| FCAPT uvby Photometry of the mCP Stars HD 86592, HR 4330, HR 6958, and HR 7786 New differential Strömgren uvby Four College Automated Photoelectric Telescope (FCAPT) observations of four magnetic CP stars HD 86592, HR 4330, HR 6958, and HR 7786 are presented. These observations are analyzed along with published FCAPT data to improve the periods and the light curves. The period of HD 86592 is that of Babel & North, 2.886669 days. The new periods of HR 4330, HR 6958, and HR 7786 are 3.152, 18.0642, and 8.5295 days, respectively, almost the same as their previous values from FCAPT data. The first three stars can be characterized as having constant light curves and periods. However, the small differences among the seasonal light curves of HR 7786 indicate it is a star whose rotational axis is precessing about its magnetic axis.
| uvby FCAPT Photometry of Six Small-Amplitude mCP Stars If magnetic fields cause elemental abundances to change in the stellarphotosphere, then all magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars shouldexhibit signatures of this effect in both their spectra and fluxdistributions. Given that all stars rotate, these stars should bemagnetic, spectrum, and photometric variables, albeit sometimes of lowamplitude. We study differential Strömgren observations from theFour College Automated Photoelectric Telescope (FCAPT) of α Psc,HR 5857, and HR 6709, which are small-amplitude mCP stars, and AB Cet,HD 15890, and HR 8240, which were thought to be near-constant mCP stars,to determine the periods and amplitudes of their photometricvariability. We construct the photometric amplitude distributionfunctions of the mCP stars studied by the first author to obtainstatistics on their photometric variability in Strömgrenphotometry. The star α Psc has a period of 0.74552 days, with itslargest amplitude in u of 0.030 mag. The largest amplitude (0.035 mag)for HR 5857 is also for u. We confirmed the period of 1.29957 days foundby Hatzes using Doppler imaging. For HR 6709 the largest amplitudeobserved (0.010 mag) is for u photometry. Its period is 1.20352 days. ABCet might be minimally variable. HD 15980 appears to be minimallyvariable, with a period of at least 5 yr. HR 8240 is variable with a bamplitude about 0.05 mag and a period that is several years long.Additional observations of these six stars would be useful to confirmtheir characteristics. Two apparently constant stars studied with FCAPTStrömgren data, HD 11187 and HD 50169, should be checked to seewhether they are long-period variables. If additional observations showtheir variability, then all mCP stars observed photometrically by thefirst author with the FCAPT will be found to be variable.
| On-line database of photometric observations of magnetic chemically peculiar stars We present our extensive project of the On-line database ofphotometric observations of magnetic chemically peculiar stars tocollect published data of photometric observations of magneticchemically peculiar (mCP) stars in the optical and near IR regions. Nowthe nascent database contains more than 107 000 photometric measurementsof 102 mCP stars and will be continually supplemented with published ornew photometric data on these and about 150 additional mCP stars. Thisreport describes the structure and organization of the database.Moreover, for the all included data we estimated the error ofmeasurements and the effective amplitudes of the light curves.
| On the Periods of the Magnetic CP Stars An HR diagram annotated to show several ranges of photometericallydetermined periods has been constructed for the magnetic CP stars whoseperiods have been determined by the author and his collaborators. Thedistribution of periods reflects both the initial conditions as well asthe subsequent stellar histories. Since the stellar magnetic field doesnot penetrate the convective core, eventually a shear zone near thecore-radiative envelope boundary may develop which produces turbulenceand modifies the field. Many, but not all, of the most rapidly rotatingmCP stars are close to the ZAMS and some of the least rapidly rotatingmCP stars are the furthest from the ZAMS.
| UVBY photometry of the magnetic CP stars HD 36668, 36 Lyncis, HD 86592, and HR 8861 Differential Strömgren uvby photometric observations from the FourCollege Automated Photoelectric Telescope (FCAPT) are presented for themagnetic CP stars HD 36668, 36 Lyn, HD 86592, and HR 8861. Using theFCAPT values, North's period for HD 36668 is refined to 2.11884 days.The 3.834 day period of Shore et al. for 36 Lyn, which was found frommagnetic field measurements, is confirmed by photometry. The FCAPTobservations also support the 2.8867 day period of Babel & North forHD 86592, demonstrate that this star is a large amplitude variable in v(0.13 mag.), and show that y varies crudely out of phase from u, v, andb which are in phase with one another. The variability of HR 8861appears to be correlated with the meridional passages of regions of Siover- and underabundance as found by Piskunov et al. | On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. | The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). | Discovery of a very large magnetic field in three AP stars. We report the discovery of magnetic fields larger than 11 kG in thethree Ap SrCrEu stars BD +40^o^ 175, HD 63843 and HD 86592. In addition,we give new results for the star HD 47103, where the correlation peak isresolved into magnetically split components. The average (quadratic)surface field measured by correlation methods in the three newlymeasured stars is 16, 12 and 16kG respectively. Their effectivetemperatures, estimated from the profile of the Balmer lines, are 7100,7500 and 7600K. The projected rotational velocities are 17, <5 and16km/s respectively, so that two of these objects are not extremely slowrotators. One object, BD +40^o^ 175, is particularly interesting as itundergoes a strong variation of the magnetic field on a timescale ofdays with extreme values at 12.8 and 22kG, together with a largevariation of the radial velocity measured in Hα and Hβindicating a probable close SB1 system. For HD 86592, a period P=2.887days is also determined from Geneva photometry. Our new measurements ofHD 47103 do not show any relative variation of larger than 1%compared with those of April 1995, suggesting that the rotational periodof this star might be very long, of the order of years. It shows,however, a significant shift in v_rad_ indicating a membership in abinary system
| A catalog of far-ultraviolet point sources detected with the fast FAUST Telescope on ATLAS-1 We list the photometric measurements of point sources made by the FarUltraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST) when it flew on the ATLAS-1 spaceshuttle mission. The list contains 4698 Galactic and extragalacticobjects detected in 22 wide-field images of the sky. At the locationssurveyed, this catalog reaches a limiting magnitude approximately afactor of 10 fainter than the previous UV all-sky survey, TDl. Thecatalog limit is approximately 1 x 10-14 ergs A sq cm/s,although it is not complete to this level. We list for each object theposition, FUV flux, the error in flux, and where possible anidentification from catalogs of nearby stars and galaxies. Thesecatalogs include the Michigan HD (MHD) and HD, SAO, the HIPPARCOS InputCatalog, the Position and Proper Motion Catalog, the TD1 Catalog, theMcCook and Sion Catalog of white dwarfs, and the RC3 Catalog ofGalaxies. We identify 2239 FAUST sources with objects in the stellarcatalogs and 172 with galaxies in the RC3 catalog. We estimate thenumber of sources with incorrect identifications to be less than 2%.

| A seven-year northern sky survey of AP stars for rapid variability A high-speed photometric survey of 120 Ap stars in the northern sky, hasbeen conducted, between 1985 and 1991, in order to search for rapidvariability. Stars of spectral types, namely from B8 to F4, have beenselected for the survey. The selected pulsational variable stars occupythe hotter regions of the instability strip of the Hertzsprung-Russeldiagram. Noted is the absence of pulsations in the hotter B8-A3 Apstars; this does not, however, preclude the existence of pulsations,since HD 218495 was recently discovered to be a rapidly oscillating Ap(roAp) star. The primary result of this study is that variouscombinations of photometric indices, while pointing towards roAp starshaving the characteristic signatures of cool, SrCrEu stars, still failto isolate the roAp phenomenon from similar nonpulsating Ap stars.Color-magnitude and color-color diagrams are presented in order tocomplete this survey.
| Objective-prism discoveries in the declination zone 0 deg to -20 deg An inspection of 130 10-deg-prism plates taken for the University ofMichigan Southern Spectral Survey has yielded 154 new peculiar orotherwise interesting stars. The regions surveyed are mainly at fairlyhigh galactic latitudes; this fills a gap in previous work of this type.About three-quarters of the objects will eventually be reclassified byHouk in a systematic work on all of the Henry Draper Catalogue stars,but many of these are of sufficient interest to justify earlypublication.
