Emission-line stars with infrared dust emission - Implications of the galactic distribution
Near-infrared photometry of a final selection of emission-line stars ispresented. A sample of about 700 such stars is analyzed and it is shownthat those with circumstellar dust have a spiral arm distribution in thegalaxy. The peculiar Be stars with dust are also considered inisolation; these too are found to have a Population I distribution. Itis therefore unlikely that they are symbiotic stars or the progenitorsof normal planetary nebulae; they probably form a distinct type whosenearest relatives are the VV Cephei stars.
