A catalogue of young runaway Hipparcos stars within 3 kpc from the Sun Traditionally, runaway stars are O- and B-type stars with large peculiarvelocities. We would like to extend this definition to young stars (upto ?50 Myr) of any spectral type and to identify those present in theHipparcos catalogue by applying different selection criteria, such aspeculiar space velocities or peculiar one-dimensional velocities.Runaway stars are important for studying the evolution of multiple starsystems or star clusters, as well as for identifying the origins ofneutron stars. We compile the distances, proper motions, spectral types, luminosity classes, V magnitudes and B-V colours, and we utilizeevolutionary models from different authors to obtain star ages. We studya sample of 7663 young Hipparcos stars within 3 kpc from the Sun. Theradial velocities are obtained from the literature. We investigate thedistributions of the peculiar spatial velocity and the peculiar radialvelocity as well as the peculiar tangential velocity and itsone-dimensional components and we obtain runaway star probabilities foreach star in the sample. In addition, we look for stars that aresituated outside any OB association or OB cluster and the Galactic planeas well as stars for which the velocity vector points away from themedian velocity vector of neighbouring stars or the surrounding local OBassociation/cluster (although the absolute velocity might be small). Wefind a total of 2547 runaway star candidates (with a contamination ofnormal Population I stars of 20 per cent at most). Thus, aftersubtracting these 20 per cent, the runaway frequency among young starsis about 27 per cent. We compile a catalogue of runaway stars, which isavailable via VizieR.
| Catalogue of Ap, HgMn and Am stars We present a catalogue of 8205 known or suspected Ap, HgMn and Am stars. This paper is a major update of our first edition of the catalog of Apand Am stars and includes revised identifications, additional stars andrevised information obtained from the literature.Catalogue (full Table 1) is only available in electronic form at the CDSvia anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/498/961
| Comparative statistics and origin of triple and quadruple stars The statistics of catalogued quadruple stars consisting of two binaries(hierarchy 2 + 2), is studied in comparison with triple stars, withrespective sample sizes of 81 and 724. Seven representative quadruplesystems are discussed in greater detail. The main conclusions are asfollows. (i) Quadruple systems of ? Lyr type with similar massesand inner periods are common, in 42 per cent of the sample the outermass ratio is above 0.5 and the inner periods differ by less than 10times. (ii) The distributions of the inner periods in triple andquadruple stars are similar and bimodal. The inner mass ratios do notcorrelate with the inner periods. (iii) The statistics of outer periodsand mass ratios in triples and quadruples are different. The medianouter mass ratio in triples is 0.39 independently of the outer period, which has a smooth distribution. In contrast, the outer periods of 25per cent quadruples concentrate in the narrow range from 10 to 100yr,the outer mass ratios of these tight quadruples are above 0.6 and theirtwo inner periods are similar to each other. (iv) The outer and innermass ratios in triple and quadruple stars are not mutually correlated. In 13 per cent of quadruples both inner mass ratios are above 0.85(double twins). (v) The inner and outer orbital angular momenta andperiods in triple and quadruple systems with inner periods above 30dshow some correlation, the ratio of outer-to-inner periods is mostlycomprised between 5 and 104. In the systems with small periodratios the directions of the orbital spins are correlated, while in thesystems with large ratios they are not. The properties of multiple starsdo not correspond to the products of dynamical decay of small clusters, hence the N-body dynamics is not the dominant process of theirformation. On the other hand, rotationally driven (cascade)fragmentation possibly followed by migration of inner and/or outerorbits to shorter periods is a promising scenario to explain the originof triple and quadruple stars.
| Contribution to the search for binaries among Am stars - VIII. New spectroscopic orbits of eight systems and statistical study of a sample of 91 Am stars This paper is the last of a series devoted to the study of Am stars, with the monitoring of radial velocities of a sample of 91 objectsduring more than 20 yr. The purpose was to determine which stars weremembers of spectroscopic binaries (SBs) and study in detail thosesystems in order to obtain observational constraints on the origin ofthe Am phenomenon. In the first part, we present the results of a detailed study of eightAm stars (HD 32893, 60489, 109762, 111057, 113697, 204918, 219675 andBD+44° 4512) observed at the Haute-Provence and Cambridgeobservatories with CORAVEL instruments. We find that these objects aresingle-lined SBs whose orbital elements are determined for the firsttime. HD 32893 is found to be a triple spectroscopic system whose thirdbody might be detected by speckle interferometry. Physical parametersare inferred for the primaries of those SBs. We then investigate theinfluence of tidal interaction and find that it has already led to thesynchronism of the primaries and to the circularization of the orbits offour of those systems. In the second part of this paper, we present the main results of ourwhole programme and derive some statistical properties of Am stars. Wegive the recapitulating table of the orbital parameters found for theSBs of our whole sample and the list of those for which no evidence forradial velocity variations could be found during our monitoring. Ourstudy shows that at least 64 per cent of Am stars are members of SBs.This rate is significantly greater than that of normal stars. Althoughsome SBs may have been not detected, this study shows that a substantialfraction of Am stars do not belong to SBs: they are either isolatedstars or members of wide binary systems. We then present some statistical properties of the orbital parameters ofthe SBs whose primary is an Am star, on an extended sample obtained byadding 29 Am SB orbits published by other authors. The corresponding eversus logP diagram shows a cut-off between the circular and theeccentric systems at P ~ 5.6 +/- 0.5 d, which indicates a typical age of0.5 - 1 × 109 yr for the Am stars, which is inagreement with the values found in our previous detailed studies. AMonte Carlo analysis shows that the distribution of the mass functionvalues f(m) is compatible with a power-law distribution N(m) ~m-α of the masses m of the companions with α =0.3 +/- 0.2 or with a Gaussian distribution centred on 0.8 +/-0.5Msolar, which indicates that the companions of Am SBs aremostly dwarf stars of type G-K-M.
| CCD astrometry and components instrumental magnitude difference of 432 Hipparcos wide visual double stars Context: We measured the angular separations, position angles, ΔV, Δ y and Δ I of wide visual double stars during the period2003-2005. At least one component of the double stars in our sample hasan entry in the Hipparcos catalogue. Aims: Our measurements are acontribution to the study of the nature of these double stars. Methods: The northern double stars of the project were observed with the1.2 m telescope of the Kryonerion observatory and the southern with the1.0 m SAAO. We performed multiple-exposure CCD imaging of our targetsand used the standard procedure of data reduction and astrometric CCDcalibrations. Results: We present measurements of 213 northern and 219southern wide binaries.Based on observations made at Kryonerion Observatory of the NationalObservatory of Athens, Greece, and the South African AstronomicalObservatory. Full Table 1 and Tables 2, 3 are only available inelectronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr(130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/472/1055
| SB9: The ninth catalogue of spectroscopic binary orbits The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations ofspectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten andcollaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for2386 systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and itspredecessors are outlined and three straightforward applications arepresented: (1) completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s andSB2s; (2) shortest periods across the H-R diagram; (3)period-eccentricity relation.
| Multiple stars with both inner and outer orbits observed spectroscopically Some progress has been made towards determining the long-period outerorbits of certain spectroscopic multiple stars.
| Contribution to the search for binaries among Am stars - IV. HD 100054B and 187258 Radial velocity observations of HD 100054B and 187258 with CORAVELinstruments at Haute-Provence and Cambridge Observatories are reported.Known as Am/Fm metallic-line stars, both objects were included in ourspectroscopic survey of Am-type stars, the purpose of which was todetermine the frequency and properties of binaries in this stellarfamily.HD 100054B is found to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary with avariable value of V0, the systemic velocity of the centre ofgravity of the pair. The variation of this parameter is interpreted interms of orbital motion of an unseen third body with a much longerperiod. The orbital elements are derived for both the short- and thelong-period orbits. We find P= 12.79430 d, T= 2449781.19 HJD, ω=137°, e= 0.028, K1= 18.69 km s-1,a1 sin i= 3.29 Gm and f(m) = 0.0087 Msolar for theshort-period orbit; and P= 874.2 d, T= 244 9377 HJD, ω= 172°,e= 0.097, K1= 5.30 km s-1, V0=-13.52 kms-1, a1 sin i= 63.4 Gm and f(m) = 0.013Msolar for the long-period orbit.HD 187258 is found to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary, theorbital elements of which are P= 25.8048 d, T= 244 9628.91 HJD, , e=0.370, K1= 17.36 km s-1, V0=-34.76 kms-1, a1 sin i= 5.72 Gm and f(m) = 0.011Msolar.Physical parameters of the primary components of these systems arederived.
| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
