The mass and mass ratio distribution of massive O type single stars and binaries The initial stellar mass function and the mass ratio distribution forbinaries is usually constructed by using a mass-spectral type-luminosityclass relation. This relation for massive stars changes if stellar windmass loss is included. The influence of stellar wind mass loss on thedetermination of the IMF is outlined. The mass ratio distributions for Otype and Wolf-Rayet binaries are discussed and compared to theoreticalbinary computations including mass loss by stellar wind. An estimate ismade for the mass loss from the system during Roche lobe overflow.
