Speckle Interferometry of Southern Double Stars. III. Measures from the Cesco Observatory, 1994-1996
Position angle and separation measures of 482 primarily southern binarystars are presented. These were obtained from speckle observations takenat the Carlos U. Cesco Observatory, El Leoncito, Argentina, using amultianode microchannel array detector during the period 1994 July to1996 July. When comparing our measures to the ephemeris predictions inthe case of objects with well-determined orbits, we find that ourmeasures have a precision of approximately 13 mas per observation inseparation and 0.75d/ρ in position angle, where ρ is theseparation in arcseconds. We briefly discuss the photometric propertiesof the data and highlight four southern binaries of particular interestthat emerge from the list presented.

Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars
Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Based on observationsmade with the ESA Hipparcos satellite.

The onset of photometric variability in red giant stars.
The onset of variability in red giant stars is studied from the datacollected by the `Long-Term Photometry of Variables' project whichoperates at ESO (La Silla) since 1982. The differential nature of theobservations combined with a multi-night reduction algorithm enables tostudy the variability of over 50 red giants with an accuracy of theorder of 2 to 3 millimagnitudes on time scales ranging from days toyears. All red giants with spectral types late G to early K (i.e.b-y~0.6-0.8) are stable at the level σ_y_<6millimag (whereσ_y_ is the standard deviation of the Stroemgren y magnitude). Redgiants with later spectral types are all variable, and it is found thatthe minimum variability level σ_y, min_ increases with increasingb-y, thus defining a minimum-variability boundary. The new data obtainedin this paper reveal that the time scale of the associated variabilityincreases with increasing b-y (and thus amplitude), and that thestability of this time scale improves concomitantly. More precisely, irregular variations on time scales of 5 to 10-days (andσ_y_~7millimag) characterize red giants with b-y~1.0, whereas thevariations (with σ_y_~100millimag) become more regular withperiods of the order of 50d for red giants with b-y~1.3. Aradial-velocity jitter (of the order of 1.5km/s r.m.s.) is associatedwith this photometric variability, and suggests that stellaroscillations may be responsible for the observed variations.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. VIII - Measurements during 1989-1991 from the Cerro Tololo 4 M telescope
One-thousand eighty-eight observations of 947 binary star systems, observed by means of speckle interferometry with the 4 m telescope onCerro Tololo, are presented. These measurements, made during the period1989-1991, comprise the second installment of results stemming from theexpansion of our speckle program to the southern hemisphere.

Long-term photometry of variables at ESO. I - The first data catalogue (1982-1986)
This paper presents the catalog of photometric data in the Stromgrensystem obtained during the first four years (October 1982 - September1986) of the Long-Term Photometry of Variables (LTPV) program at ESO.The data are available in computer-readable form.

Estimation of spectral classifications for bright southern stars with interesting Stromgren indices
This paper investigates the degree of success with which uvby photometrycan be applied to predict spectral classifications for 947 A, F, and Gstars brighter than an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and with four-colorindices indicating some kind of interesting, unusual, or peculiarspectrum. One or several possible spectral classifications are estimatedfor each star from photometry alone, double stars are distinguished, andthe estimates are compared with published classifications. The resultsshow that the framework provided by uvby photometry can be extended toinclude most G and K stars, reddened stars, peculiar stars, and certaintypes of double star.
