The 2MASS Wide-Field T Dwarf Search. II. Discovery of Three T Dwarfs in the Southern Hemisphere We present the discovery of three new southern hemisphere T dwarfsidentified in the Two Micron All Sky Survey. These objects, 2MASS0348-6022, 2MASS 0516-0445, and 2MASS 2228-4310, have classificationsT7, T5.5, and T6.5, respectively. Using linear absolutemagnitude/spectral type relations derived from T dwarfs with measuredparallaxes, we estimate spectrophotometric distances for thesediscoveries; the closest, 2MASS 0348-6022, is likely within 10 pc of theSun. Proper motions and estimated tangential velocities are consistentwith membership in the Galactic disk population. We also list southernhemisphere T dwarf candidates that were either not found in subsequentnear-infrared imaging observations and are most likely uncataloged minorplanets, or have near-infrared spectra consistent with background stars.
| An extensive Delta a-photometric survey of southern B and A type bright stars Photoelectric photometry of 803 southern BS objects in the Deltaa-system as detection tool for magnetic chemically peculiar (=CP2) starshas been carried out and compared to published spectral types. Thestatistical yield of such objects detected by both techniques ispractically the same. We show that there are several factors whichcontaminate the search for these stars, but this contamination is onlyof the order of 10% in both techniques. We find a smooth transition fromnormal to peculiar stars. Our sample exhibits the largest fraction ofCP2 stars at their bluest colour interval, i.e. 10% of all stars in thecolour range -0.19 <= B-V < -0.10 or -0.10 <= b-y < -0.05.No peculiar stars based on the Delta a-criterion were found at bluercolours. Towards the red side the fraction of CP2 stars drops to about3% for positive values of B-V or b-y with red limits roughlycorresponding to normal stars of spectral type A5. The photometricbehaviour of other peculiar stars: Am, HgMn, delta Del, lambda Boo, Heabnormal stars, as well as Be/shell stars and supergiants shows someslight, but definite deviations from normal stars. Spectroscopic andvisual binaries are not distinguished from normal stars in their Delta abehaviour. The results of this work justify larger statistical work(e.g. in open clusters) employing more time-saving photometric methods(CCD). \newpage Based on observations obtained at the European SouthernObservatory, La Silla, Chile. | Determination of the temperatures of selected ISO flux calibration stars using the Infrared Flux Method Effective temperatures for 420 stars with spectral types between A0 andK3, and luminosity classes between II and V, selected for a fluxcalibration of the Infrared Space Observatory, ISO, have been determinedusing the Infrared Flux Method (IRFM). The determinations are based onnarrow and wide band photometric data obtained for this purpose, andtake into account previously published narrow-band measures oftemperature. Regression coefficients are given for relations between thedetermined temperatures and the photometric parameters (B2-V1), (b-y)and (B-V), corrected for interstellar extinction through use ofHipparcos parallaxes. A correction for the effect of metallicity on thedetermination of integrated flux is proposed. The importance of aknowledge of metallicity in the representation of derived temperaturesfor Class V, IV and III stars by empirical functions is discussed andformulae given. An estimate is given for the probable error of eachtemperature determination. Based on data from the ESA HipparcosAstrometry Satellite.
| On the nature of the AM phenomenon or on a stabilization and the tidal mixing in binaries. II. Metallicity and pseudo-synchronization. We reveal sufficient evidences that for Am binaries the metallicitymight depend on their orbital periods, P_orb_, rather than on vsini. Inparticular, δm_1_ index seems to decrease with increasing orbitalperiod up to at least P_orb_=~50d, probably even up to P_orb_=~200d.This gives further support to our "tidal mixing + stabilization"hypothesis formulated in Part I. Moreover, while the most metallic Amstars seem to have rather large periods the slowest rotators are foundto exhibit substantially shorter P_orb_. A questioning eye is thus caston the generally adopted view that Am peculiarity is caused by asuppressed rotationally induced mixing in slowly rotating `single'stars. The observed anticorrelation between rotation and metallicity mayhave also other than the `textbook' explanation, namely being the resultof the correlation between metallicity and orbital period, as themajority of Am binaries are possibly synchronized. We further argue thatthere is a tendency in Am binaries towards pseudo-synchronization up toP_orb_=~35d. This has, however, no serious impact on our conclusionsfrom Part I; on the contrary, they still hold even if this effect istaken into account.
| On the nature of the AM phenomenon or on a stabilization and the tidal mixing in binaries. I. Orbital periods and rotation. The paper casts a questioning eye on the unique role of the diffusiveparticle transport mechanism in explaining the Am phenomenon and arguesthat the so-called tidal effects might be of great importance incontrolling diffusion processes. A short period cutoff at =~1.2d as wellas a 180-800d gap were found in the orbital period distribution (OPD) ofAm binaries. The existence of the former can be ascribed to the state ofthe primaries with the almost-filled Roche lobes. The latter couldresult from the combined effects of the diffusion, tidal mixing andstabilization processes. Because the tidal mixing might surpassdiffusion in the binaries with the orbital periods P_orb_ less thanseveral hundred days and might thus sustain the He convection zone, which would otherwise disappear, no Am stars should lie below thisboundary. The fact that they are nevertheless seen there implies theexistence of some stabilization mechanism (as, e.g., that recentlyproposed by Tassoul & Tassoul 1992) for the binaries with orbitalperiods less than 180d. Further evidence is given to the fact that theOPD for the Am and the normal binaries with an A4-F1 primary arecomplementary to each other, from which it stems that Am stars are closeto the main sequence. There are, however, indications that they haveslightly larger radii (2.1-3 Rsun_) than expected for theirspectral type. The generally accepted rotational velocity cutoff at=~100km/s is shown to be of little value when applied on Am binaries ashere it is not a single quantity but, in fact, a function of P_orb_whose shape is strikingly similar to that of the curves of constantmetallicity as ascertained from observations. This also leads to thewell known overlap in rotational velocities of the normal and Am starsfor 402.5d.We have exploited this empirical cutoff function to calibrate thecorresponding turbulent diffusion coefficient associated with tidalmixing, having found out that the computed form of the lines of constantturbulence fits qualitatively the empirical shape of the curves ofconstant metallicity. As for larger orbital periods(20d55km/s found by Burkhart(1979) would then be nothing but a manifestation of insufficientlypopulated corresponding area of larger P_orb_.

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| A search for radio emission from the 'nonmagnetic' chemically peculiar stars We have observed 23 members of the Am and HgMn subclasses of chemicallypeculiar (CP) stars with the Very Large Array (VLA) to search fornonthermal radio emission at levels comparable to those found for the Siand He peculiar subclasses of the CP stars by Linsky et al. (1992). Thisstudy was motivated by recent claims that magnetic fields of kilogaussstrength are present in at least some of the Am and HgMn stars, contraryto previous beliefs, which would indicate that radio-emittingmagnetospheres could be present in these stars. We detected none of theAm and HgMn stars as radio emitters with upper limits typically lessthan 0.20 mJy. Applying a correlation between radio luminosity, surfacemagnetic field, and effective temperature derived from previous radiostudies of the Si and He peculiar CP stars, we find that the predictedradio luminosities of alpha And (an HgMn star) and Sirius (a hot Amstar) are more than an order of magnitude larger than the observed upperlimits, indicating that these stars lack magnetospheres, and, byinference, surface magnetic fields.

| The late A-type stars - Refined MK classification, confrontation with Stromgren photometry, and the effects of rotation The MK spectral classification for late A-type stars is refined and theeffects of rotation of spectral classification and uvby(beta) photometryfor these stars are examined. It is found that, for A3 stars, the4417/4481 A wavelength ratio produces results that are inconsistent withthe Stark broadening of the H lines. It is suggested that this ratio isnot useful as a luminosity criterion at any spectral type.Self-consistent sequences of narrow- and broadline standards areestablished. The results of the refined classification system arecompared with Stromgren photometry, showing a set of low-v sin i A-typestars with anomalously large delta(c1) indices for theirluminosity types. It is proposed that these stars are rapid rotatorsseen at fairly low inclination angles.
| Miscellaneous spectroscopic notes Results of slit-spectrograph observations are reported for approximately260 stars. The data presented range from recognition of many new Ap, Am,and other unusual stars to H-alpha observations of early-typesupergiants and Be stars. The material discussed was obtained over thepast 40 years at a number of U.S. observatories and at the DominionAstrophysical Observatory in Victoria, B.C.
| IUE low-dispersion reference atlas This atlas, published by ESA and essentially devoted to normal stars, presents 229 graphic spectra together with the corresponding fluxes andan ultraviolet spectral type. The preparation of this publicationconfirmed that MK classifications cannot simply be transferred to theultraviolet range. A set of transparencies illustrates the referencesequences constructed from the ultraviolet data. A magnetic-tape copy ofall the spectra pertaining to this atlas is available from the StellarData Center in Strasbourg.
| The period distribution of unevolved close binary systems Period distributions have been examined for various spectral types ofabout 600 (eclipsing and spectroscopic) close binaries, which are likelyto be substantially unevolved. The comparison with the previouscorresponding analyses of extensive (but heterogeneous) binary samplesallows a clarification of the extent of the evolutionary andobservational selection effects. Remarkably, this analysis reveals agreat deficiency of short period binaries (with periods corresponding tocase A mass transfer) in the whole spectral range. For the late spectraltypes, this result may be connected with postformation angular momentumloss caused by stellar wind magnetic braking; at least for the late Band A spectral range, a ready interpretation of this finding is thatclose binaries of corresponding periods and spectral types are rarelyformed.
| IUE low-dispersion spectra flux catalogue. I - Normal stars (magnetic tape) A magnetic tape catalog of the fluxes (2A-step) of 229 selectedlow-dispersion stellar spectra prepared by the Centre de Calcul deStrasbourg-Cronenbourg is presented in the form of a set of tables. Thecatalog uses the general MK frame and centers on stars exhibiting normalbehavior in the ultraviolet. All the stars included in the catalog arelisted together with their MK and UV spectral classifications. Thespectra were collected by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE)with the aim of establishing reference spectral sequences in theultraviolet range.
| Four-colour photometry of B stars north of B = + 45 deg and comparison with the south Four-color photometry of 33 Henry Draper B stars north of b = + 45 degis presented. Most are little-reddened B or intermediate-A stars. A newAm star is discovered. The new measures essentially complete uvbyphotometry of all HD B stars within 45 deg of either galactic pole. Thenorthern and southern cones of HD B stars are compared, and selectioneffects deduced. Far from the galactic plane, it appears that B starsmay be equally distributed north and south of the plane; closer to thesun, an asymmetry associated with Gould's Belt is evident.
| Infrared magnitudes (JHKLM) for 105 chemically peculiar A- and B-stars Observational data for IR surveys of 105 CP stars in the JHKLM regionsare reported. The data were taken with the ESO 1 m telescope duringthree separate viewing periods, with four observations being made ofeach object. The measurements were treated for the mean SNR ratio, thestandard deviation of the mean signal, and the accuracy of thezero-point. Duplicate measurements were made of objects which weresuspected of being variable, and mean values were derived.
| Properties of Am, Delta Del and Delta SCT stars in the VBLUW system The spread with respect to the main sequence in the two-color diagramsfor 115 Am, Delta Del and Delta Sct, for which VBLUW photometricobservations have been obtained, is primarily attributed to gravityeffects. Exceptions to this rule can be recognized from a comparison oftheir positions in these diagrams and in the reddening-independentdiagram L-U/B-L, where some Delta Sct stars have experienced relativelyhigh reddenings, while others are presumably metal-poor. It is notedthat gravities and temperatures compare satisfactorily with those ofDavis Philip et al. (1976), which were based on uvby-beta photometry.
| Polarimetric observations of southern binary systems Polarimetric results are presented for 23 southern hemisphere binarysystems, indicating that 15 of these stars show polarimetric variations. The Brown et al. (1978) model is shown to permit the computation of theorbital plane, and it is concluded that the probability of detectingcircumstellar material in close binary systems is high. Three systemswith Am components, and one with an Ap component, are found to bevariables or possible variables. It is suggested that mechanisms otherthan Thompson scattering have been responsible for their polarization.

| Interstellar reddening towards the south galactic pole B, A and F type stars are observed in an area of about 400 squaredegrees around the galactic south pole (SGP) using theStroemgren-Crawford uvby-beta system at the 60 cm telescope of theBochum station on La Silla, Chile. With calibrations for B and F typestars and the provisional calibration for the stars of Stroemgren's LateGroup-A-stars, intrinsic (b-y)0 colors are derived and then used todescribe the interstellar absorption structure of the SGP. To determinethe galactic extinction perpendicular to the galactic plane, thereddening values of distant stars are averaged in order to include boththe reddened and unreddened areas at the SGP. A mean value E(b-y)SGPequals 0.019 m is derived and is found to agree well with earliervalues, except with that of Knude (1977). Explanations for the deviationare considered, implying that Knude's value is systematically too high.

| Photoelectric filter photometry of the flux depression at 5200 A in Ap-stars A new photometric index was used to characterize the flux depression at5200 A in a photoelectric filter photometric study of a large number ofnormal A-stars, Ap-stars, Am-stars, and Hg-Mn-stars. The new index isdefined as a = g - (h + y)/2, where g and h are the brightnesses at 5240and 5020 A, respectively, measured by interference filters, and y is thebrightness measured with a Stromgren filter. The index reveals a markedcontrast between normal and peculiar stars.
